Tied to the world of luxury textiles through his family business, Francis distanced himself from it with sensational gestures, such as stripping completely naked to return all his clothes to his father.
At the same time, however, he displayed a care and sensitivity toward clothing that only an expert could possess.
Constantly in search of the perfect robe, he designed a cross-shaped habit for himself and his friars.
According to the teaching of Paul of Tarsus, Francis wanted to clothe himself with Christ: here, finally, was the perfect robe he will wear, stitched with the stigmata onto his own tortured flesh.
An original and intriguing journey that winds through the writings of Francis and his biographers, exploring the rich iconography of the saint and drawing on the costumes from Franco Zeffirelli’s masterpiece, Brother Sun, Sister Moon.
