This book aims to present a wide history of Perugia over the centuries, that takes into account various points of view, starting from the political and institutional events with an eye to the outline of the city (shape of the city, division of the city in quarters each one with its own gateway and parish as elements of city identity) to the description of the major monuments which were, and in some cases still are, the seat of the city government.

The volume also includes short essays on Assisi, Città di Castello, Deruta, Gubbio, Spoleto and Todi.

Maria Grazia Nico Ottaviani is a Reader in Medieval History at the Humanities Faculty in the University of Perugia. She is an expert in the political and institutional history of the commune and in the legislation of the medieval cities.
